Online Course Development

Learning Management System

Canvas Instructure

Each online course that I create is done through the Canvas Instructure LMS. As an instructional designer I have created online courses for the Heber City seminary and institute programs, as well as the Utah Valley Central Region. Examples and artifacts are included below.

Utah Valley Central Region - Online Seminary

As the lead instructional designer for the Utah Valley Central Region, I was responsible for creating an online learning management system for seminary students in both the Alpine and Wasatch school districts. The artifacts below explain the creation and implementation of that learning system and instructional content.

Doctrine and Covenants - Part 2

This video provides a complete overview of the creation and implementation of the online seminary program in the Utah Valley Central Region. It includes important information on the planning and design of the program including an overview on the instructional content that is currently being used.

Sections and Principles Summary

Creating instructional content for this online program required selecting lesson content that would be most relevant to our students. In order to choose the most relevant lesson content, I created a summary of the principles found in S&I curriculum. As a team, the instructors and I selected relevant content and principals which I then designed lessons around.

Fall 2021 Pacing Schedule

Before I began creating the course I created a unified pacing schedule for August through December of the fall 2021 school semester for both the Alpine and Wasatch school districts. This schedule includes and blends together the Doctrinal Mastery and "Come, Follow Me" curriculum used by S&I and the required basic doctrines learning assessments.

Heber City LDS Online Seminary Program

Like many other organizations, COVID-19 required Seminaries and Institutes of religion to provide seminary courses in an online format. The Heber City Seminary didn't have an online presence and due to my education and professional experience, I was placed in charge of the online seminary program and the creation of the instructional content. I created three complete courses in total.

Course Organization and Lesson Content

For each course that I create, weeks are organized as modules. Each week students are required to complete two 25-minute Canvas assignments and one 40-minute Zoom class. The first Canvas assignment is a student-content format. The content is created from the Doctrinal Mastery curriculum provided by Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. The second Canvas assignment is a student-student format providing students a social learning environment. Lesson content is created based on curriculum from Seminaries and Institutes of Religion as we as the "Come, Follow Me" curriculum from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Modules

In each course, weeks are organized as modules. Each module includes links to announcements, assignments, supplemental learning content, and the necessary links for students to access required reading.

Doctrinal Mastery

Doctrinal Mastery (DM) assignments are included in each module. I design and create each DM lesson based on Supplemental Doctrinal Mastery lessons provided by Curriculum Services of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Discussion Forums

Student-student assignments are also included in each module. These lessons are based on S&I curriculum and the "Come, Follow Me" curriculum from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Hybrid Courses

As part of my study on Technology and Distance Education I had the opportunity to develop an online course using Canvas Instructure. The first course that I developed, Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel (Religion 250) is traditionally offered in a face-to-face setting so I adapted it to an online learning environment. After developing the course, I decided to implement the online tools I created, turning the face-to-face course that I was teaching into a hybrid face-to-face/online setting. It was so successful, I decided to create online content for the other three courses that I teach and made them available through Canvas. The links to these courses are provided below.

This course, The Eternal Family (Religion 200), is a study of the central role of the family in the plan of salvation as taught in the scriptures and the words of modern prophets. See the course syllabus here.

This course, Foundations of the Restoration (Religion 225) is a study of the foundational revelations, doctrine, people, and historical events related to the latter-day Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ. See course the syllabus here.

This course, Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel (Religion 250) is a study of the eternal ministry of Jesus Christ, and focuses on His divine roles throughout His premortal, mortal, and postmortal life. See the course syllabus here.

This course, The Teachings and Doctrines of the Book of Mormon (Religion 275) is a study of the Book of Mormon. The lessons found in this course focus on prominent doctrinal themes emphasized by the inspired authors of the Book of Mormon. See the course syllabus here.
