Change Theory: Doctrinal Mastery
For decades, Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (S&I) followed a program known as Scripture Mastery, which focused on memorization of scriptural references and passages. The purpose of S&I is to help youth and young adults understand and rely on the teachings and Atonement of Jesus Christ and to better accomplish this purpose a new focus called Doctrinal Mastery was implemented.
Doctrinal Mastery is another way to help students to understand, believe, and live the doctrine of Jesus Christ. Doctrinal Mastery supplements the sequential study of the scriptures by providing opportunities for students to study the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ by topic.
The implementation of Doctrinal Mastery requires significantly more classroom time than Scripture Mastery. This proved to be challenging considering the need to maintain the instruction of our core curriculum required for Seminary graduation. To better understand change theory, I observed, analysed, and helped to design the implementation of Doctrinal Mastery into our program here in Heber City, Utah.
